Before you start: the basics you need to know

Three things to understand before you open a betting account in Belgium.

You must be 21 or older

The minimum legal age for online sports betting in Belgium is 21. This is stricter than the EU baseline of 18 and applies to all licensed Belgian operators including Napoleon Sports. Age is verified through identity documents during the KYC process.

Only use BGC-licensed operators

The Belgian Gaming Commission (BGC) is the federal regulator for all gambling activity in Belgium. Only operators with a Belgian licence can legally accept bets from Belgian residents. Look for the BGC logo in the footer of any betting site before depositing. Cross-verify on gamingcommission.be. Napoleon Games NV holds a Belgian Gaming Commission licence.

Bet only with money you can afford to lose

This is the single most important principle. Betting is entertainment, not income. Set aside a fixed amount you are comfortable losing entirely. The full Bankroll Management section below covers practical rules. If betting starts feeling like financial pressure rather than enjoyment, stop immediately.

Understanding football betting odds

Odds are the foundation of betting. Once you understand them, every bet type becomes much easier to read.

Decimal odds: the European standard

Napoleon Sports and most European bookmakers use decimal odds. The number tells you your total return per €1 staked, including your stake.

Decimal odds €10 stake returns Profit What the market says
1.20 €12.00 €2.00 Heavy favourite
1.50 €15.00 €5.00 Solid favourite
2.00 €20.00 €10.00 50/50 outcome
3.00 €30.00 €20.00 Underdog
5.00 €50.00 €40.00 Heavy underdog

The simple formula: stake × decimal odds = total return. So €10 at 2.50 odds returns €25 total (€10 stake + €15 profit).

What odds tell you about probability

Odds are the bookmaker's estimate of how likely an outcome is. To convert decimal odds to implied probability, divide 1 by the odds:

  • Odds of 2.00 = 50% implied probability (1 / 2.00 = 0.50)
  • Odds of 1.50 = 67% implied probability (1 / 1.50 = 0.67)
  • Odds of 5.00 = 20% implied probability (1 / 5.00 = 0.20)

The lower the odds, the higher the bookmaker thinks the outcome is to happen. Heavy favourites have low odds because they are expected to win; underdogs have high odds because they are unlikely to.

Popular bet types explained

You don't need to understand every market on day one. Start with the basics. Two bet types account for the majority of beginner betting volume: 1X2 and Over/Under Total Goals.

1X2 (Match Winner)

The most common bet in football. You pick one of three outcomes after 90 minutes of regular time:

  • 1: the home team wins
  • X: the match ends in a draw
  • 2: the away team wins
Selection Pays out when Example
1 Home team wins after 90 minutes Spain 2-0 Cabo Verde
X Match ends in a draw after 90 minutes Spain 1-1 Cabo Verde
2 Away team wins after 90 minutes Spain 0-1 Cabo Verde

Practical example: Belgium vs Egypt. Belgium priced at 1.67 to win. You stake €10 on Belgium. If Belgium wins after 90 minutes, you receive €16.70 total (€10 stake + €6.70 profit). If Belgium draws or loses, your stake is lost.

Important note for knockout matches: the 1X2 market only counts the regular 90 minutes. Extra time and penalty shootouts are settled separately under the "To Qualify" market. See the glossary entry on To Qualify for details.

Over/Under Total Goals

You bet on whether the total number of goals scored by both teams will be over or under a specified line. The most common line is 2.5 goals.

Final score Total goals Under 2.5 wins? Over 2.5 wins?
0-0 0 Yes No
1-0 / 0-1 / 1-1 1 or 2 Yes No
2-0 / 0-2 2 Yes No
2-1 / 1-2 3 No Yes
3-0 / 0-3 / 2-2 3 or 4 No Yes
3-1, 4-0, 3-2... 4 or more No Yes

The half (.5) is added so a bet cannot end in a tie. With Over/Under 2.5:

  • Over 2.5 wins if the final score has 3 or more total goals (2-1, 3-0, 2-2, 4-1, etc.)
  • Under 2.5 wins if the final score has 2 or fewer total goals (0-0, 1-0, 1-1, 2-0)

BTTS (Both Teams to Score)

A simple yes-or-no bet on whether both teams score at least one goal during the match. "Yes" pays only if both teams find the net; "No" pays if at least one team finishes scoreless. Easy to understand, popular for the tournament matches between attacking sides.

Anytime Goalscorer

You bet on a specific player to score at any point during regular or extra time. The most common player prop bet. Star strikers like Mbappé or Kane against weaker group-stage opposition are typically priced 1.50 to 1.80, reflecting a 55-65% expected scoring rate.

Outright Tournament Winner

A long-term bet placed before the tournament starts on which nation wins the tournament. All 48 teams are priced. Settled at the end of the tournament. Spain at 5.50, France at 6.00, England at 8.00 are the current Napoleon Sports favourites. See our favourites guide and dark horses guide for full breakdowns.

A note on Asian Handicaps

You may see "Asian Handicap" markets across all matches. These give one team a virtual goal advantage or disadvantage to make the betting more even. Useful for experienced bettors but can confuse beginners. Stick to 1X2 and Over/Under for your first weeks; come back to Asian Handicaps once the basics feel natural.

How to register an account at Napoleon Sports

Registration is straightforward. Plan around 10 minutes total, including identity verification.

Step 1: Choose your platform

You can register at napoleonsports.be in any browser, or download the Napoleon Sports App from the iOS App Store or Google Play. Your account works the same on both. Most bettors use the app for match-day betting because it is faster.

Step 2: Fill in your details

Required information for a new account:

  • Email address
  • Phone number (Belgian)
  • Full name and date of birth (must be 21+)
  • Address (Belgian residents only)
  • Strong password

Step 3: Complete identity verification (KYC)

Belgian regulation requires identity verification before you can withdraw winnings. You can usually start betting with deposited funds while verification is in progress. To verify, upload one of:

  • Belgian eID (preferred, fastest verification)
  • Valid passport
  • European national identity card

Verification typically completes within hours during business days. Do this in the week before the tournament starts, not on match day.

Step 4: Set your responsible gaming limits before depositing

Belgian regulation gives you control tools that you should configure before you start betting. The most important:

  • Deposit limit: cap how much you can deposit per day, week or month. Start conservative.
  • Loss limit: cap how much you can lose over a defined period.
  • Session limit: cap how long you can be logged in at one time.

These limits exist to protect you. Set them before you make your first deposit, while you are thinking clearly. Increasing them later requires a delay; decreasing them is immediate.

How to deposit funds

Once your account is created and your responsible gaming limits are set, you can fund it. Napoleon Sports accepts the standard Belgian payment methods.

Available payment methods

  • Bancontact (preferred for Belgian residents, instant)
  • Bank card (Visa, Mastercard, Maestro)
  • E-wallets (PayPal, Skrill, Neteller)
  • Apple Pay and Google Pay
  • Bank transfer (SEPA, slower than other options)

Bancontact and e-wallet deposits arrive instantly. Bank transfers can take 1-3 business days. The minimum deposit is shown on the deposit screen.

Choosing your first deposit amount

Beginners often deposit too much in the excitement of getting started. A practical rule: deposit only what you would be comfortable losing entirely. For most beginners, that means starting with €20 to €50, not €200 or €500. You can always add more later if you are comfortable with the experience and your limits allow.

How to place your first bet

You have an account, you have funds, and you understand the basic markets. Now the actual placing of a bet, broken into clear steps.

Step 1: Find the match

Navigate to WC 2026 in the Football section, or use the search bar to find a specific match. The full match list is on our match betting hub. Tap a match to open its full markets page.

Step 2: Choose your market and selection

The 1X2 market is shown at the top of every match page by default, with three boxes for home win, draw and away win. Tap the box for your prediction. The selection is added to your bet slip.

Step 3: Review your bet slip

Your bet slip

Spain to win

Spain vs Cabo Verde · Match Result · 15 June

Odds 1.08
Stake € 10.00
Estimated returns € 10.80

Total return = Stake × Odds  →  €10.00 × 1.08 = €10.80

The bet slip is on the right of your screen on desktop, or at the bottom on mobile. It shows three things:

  • Your selection: the team or outcome you picked, plus the odds
  • Stake input box: where you type the amount you want to bet
  • Estimated returns: the total payout if your bet wins (stake × odds)

Step 4: Enter your stake

Type the amount you want to bet. The estimated returns update automatically. For your first bet, keep the stake small while you learn the flow. €5 to €10 is plenty.

Step 5: Confirm and place

Tap "Place Bet". You may be asked to confirm if odds have changed since you opened the slip. Once confirmed, the bet is locked. You will see it under "My Bets" or "Open Bets" in your account.

Step 6: Wait for settlement

Once the match ends, the bet settles automatically. If you won, the payout credits to your account within minutes. If you lost, the bet is marked as lost. You can withdraw winnings via your verified payment method, subject to KYC completion.

Bankroll management for beginners

Your bankroll is the total amount of money you have set aside for betting. Managing it well is the difference between betting being a sustainable hobby and an expensive habit.

Set a fixed bankroll for the tournament

Decide before the tournament starts how much you are willing to spend across the entire seven weeks. Once you have that number (€100, €200, €500, whatever fits your situation), do not add to it during the tournament regardless of wins or losses.

Use unit betting

"Unit betting" means staking a fixed percentage of your bankroll on each bet. Standard recommendations are 1% to 5% per bet. With a €200 bankroll:

  • 1% (€2 per bet): very conservative, your bankroll lasts a long time even on losing runs
  • 2% (€4 per bet): balanced, recommended for most beginners
  • 5% (€10 per bet): aggressive, large variance, can drain a bankroll quickly during cold streaks

Stick to the same unit size regardless of how confident you feel. Confidence is not statistically reliable; consistency is.

Track every bet

Keep a simple log: date, match, market, odds, stake, outcome, profit or loss. After two weeks of the tournament you will have real data on your own betting patterns. Are you doing better on Over/Under than on 1X2? Are accumulators losing more than they pay? The log shows you.

Withdraw winnings regularly

If you win, withdraw at least part of your winnings rather than leaving them in your account. Money that stays in the betting account tends to get re-bet. Pull it out, cool off, and decide deliberately whether to reinvest later.

5 common beginner mistakes to avoid

Every experienced bettor has made these mistakes early on. Avoiding them protects both your bankroll and your enjoyment of the tournament.

Mistake 1: Betting with your heart

The most common beginner trap, especially during the tournament. Fans often back their own national team because they want them to win, not because the odds suggest value. Bet the data, not the emotion. If a team is priced at 1.67 to beat an opponent, that is the market's read regardless of what your heart says. Use a different match if your judgement on a team is too biased.

Mistake 2: Stacking too many selections in a Combo Bet

A Combo Bet (also called accumulator) combines multiple selections, with all needing to win. The odds multiply, which makes the potential payout look impressive. The reality: the more selections you add, the lower your win probability becomes. A 5-leg accumulator with each leg at 60% probability has only a 7.8% chance of all legs winning. Stick to single bets or 2 to 3 selection combos while you are learning.

Mistake 3: Chasing losses

You lose a €10 bet, so you bet €20 on the next one to win it back. You lose that, you bet €40 on the next. This is "chasing losses" and it ends one way: a drained bankroll. The opposite of the discipline that bankroll management requires. If you find yourself increasing stakes after losses, take a Time-Out in your account settings and step away.

Mistake 4: Betting blind on the favourites

"Spain is the favourite, so I'll back Spain" is not analysis, it is following the crowd. Check team form, recent results, key player availability and tactical context before placing. The bookmaker has already priced in Spain's favourite status; backing them blindly without checking why means you are paying for information you didn't read. Our favourites guide and star players guide give you the context you need.

Mistake 5: Betting on every match

The tournament has 104 matches across 39 days. You do not need to bet on all of them. Pick matches where you have a clear read; skip matches where the form is murky or you have no information. Discipline is what separates sustainable betting from compulsive betting.

Responsible betting: tools you can use

Belgian regulation requires all licensed operators to offer responsible gaming tools. At Napoleon Sports they are built directly into the app and can be configured at any time.

  • Deposit limits per day, week or month
  • Loss limits over a defined period
  • Session limits to cap time logged in
  • Reality check notifications at scheduled intervals
  • Time-Out: pause your account for 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days
  • Self-Exclusion: close your account for 6 months, 1 year or permanently
  • EPIS registration: the Belgian-wide self-exclusion register that legally bars you from all licensed operators in Belgium

Reduce your limits at any time, instantly. Increasing limits requires a regulatory delay before taking effect. This is by design, to give you a cooling-off window before you can take on more risk.

Beginner FAQ

What is the minimum age to bet on the tournament in Belgium?

21 years old. This is stricter than the EU baseline of 18. Age is verified through your eID or passport during the KYC registration process.

How long does account verification (KYC) take?

Typically within hours during business days when you upload a Belgian eID. International passports can take a little longer. You can usually start betting with deposited funds while verification is in progress; only withdrawals require completed verification.

What is the minimum I can bet?

The minimum stake at Napoleon Sports is shown on the bet slip when you select a market. For most markets it is very low, often €0.50 or €1. There is no expectation that you bet large amounts; small stakes are fine while you are learning.

What happens if a match is postponed or cancelled?

Bets on a postponed match are typically held until the rescheduled date. Bets on a cancelled match are voided and stakes refunded. Specific rules appear in the bet slip terms when you place the bet.

Can I cancel a bet after placing it?

Generally no. Once a bet is confirmed, it cannot be cancelled. The exception is the Cash Out feature: for many bets you can settle early at a recalculated value before the match ends. See the glossary entry on Cash Out for detail.

How quickly do winnings credit to my account?

For most match bets, winnings settle automatically within minutes of the final whistle. For bets in markets requiring official statistics confirmation (e.g., specific player counts), settlement may take a little longer.

How do I withdraw my winnings?

Yes. Many experienced bettors hold accounts at two or three Belgian Gaming Commission licensed operators specifically to compare odds. Always verify the BGC licence before depositing at any new operator.

What is the safest bet type for a beginner?

1X2 on a single match with a clear favourite is the simplest one to start. Over/Under 2.5 goals is also accessible. Avoid Combo Bets (accumulators) with more than 2-3 selections until you understand probability mechanics. Avoid First Goalscorer and Correct Score until you have experience reading match dynamics.
