Types of bets on the Champions League qualification

Each qualifying round consists of a first and a second leg. So you can bet on each individual match, but also on the outcome of the full tie. Below are the markets that are chosen most often, each with a short, concrete example.

Match result (1X2)

Double chance

If you want to play a little more cautiously, double chance covers two of the three outcomes in one choice: home win or draw (1X), away win or draw (X2), or home or away win (12). Handy for evenly matched ties in which a draw is realistic.

Both teams to score

Here you predict whether both teams score at least once in the match (yes or no). In ties where a team has to attack in numbers, this market is often in demand. Example: in a second leg where the visitor has to make up a deficit, 'both teams to score: yes' can feel logical.

Total goals (over/under)

You bet on whether the total number of goals in a match is above or below a set line. Qualifying ties between defensively minded teams often end low-scoring, which makes this market interesting to analyse.

Asian handicap & correct score

For those who want to go deeper: with an Asian handicap you give a team a virtual head start or deficit in goals in advance, while with correct score you predict the exact scoreline. Both markets ask for a little more knowledge of the teams, but offer a more refined way to translate your read.

Who goes through? (qualification market)

The market that captures the tension of a tie: you bet on which club qualifies for the next round after the two legs. Here the total result over two matches counts, including any extra time and penalties. Ideal if you have a strong view on the tie as a whole, rather than one single result.

Outright: who reaches the league phase?

Alongside the matches, you can often also bet longer term: which clubs from qualification eventually reach the league phase. These odds evolve round by round, as teams go through or are eliminated.

Live betting on the qualifying matches

During the matches there are live odds that move with the flow of play. That is particularly relevant in qualifying ties: one early goal, a red card or a missed chance changes the whole picture of a tie. How does the Champions League qualification work?

Since the new format of 2024/2025, qualification looks different than before. The old preliminary round has been abolished, and the road to the league phase now runs via four rounds.

The rounds

In order, these are the first (Q1), second (Q2) and third qualifying round (Q3), followed by the decisive play-off round. Each round is played over two matches - a first and a second leg - and only the winner goes through. Where a club enters depends on the UEFA coefficient: clubs from stronger countries start later (for example in Q3 or the play-off round), while clubs from lower-ranked countries already start in Q1 or Q2 and therefore have to survive more rounds.

Champions Path and League Path

From the second round, qualification splits into two separate paths. The Champions Path is reserved for the national champions of smaller football nations and delivers five tickets. The League Path is for the clubs that finished second, third or fourth in the stronger leagues and delivers two tickets. In total, seven clubs reach the league phase through qualification. The split exists to give champions of smaller countries a fairer chance: they face each other in the Champions Path, rather than being pitted straight away against the runners-up from the big leagues.

The Belgian clubs in qualification

For the 2026/2027 season, Belgium sends two clubs towards the Champions League. Club Brugge took the national title and are therefore directly qualified for the league phase - blue-and-black play no qualification. Union Saint-Gilloise finished second and do have to qualify: as runners-up from the number eight of Europe, Union enter in the third qualifying round of the League Path. If Union win that tie, the play-off round follows as the final hurdle before the league phase.

Qualification is played through the summer months, always over a first and a second leg:

1st qualifying round: 7-8 July (1st leg) and 14-15 July (2nd leg)
2nd qualifying round: 21-22 July (1st leg) and 28-29 July (2nd leg)
3rd qualifying round: 4-5 August (1st leg) and 11 August (2nd leg)
Play-off round: 18-19 August (1st leg) and 25-26 August (2nd leg)

After the play-off round, the league phase entry list is complete, just in time for the draw on 27 August 2026.

From qualification to the league phase

Whoever wins the play-off round qualifies for the league phase of the Champions League with 36 clubs. Those who lose the play-off round, however, are not immediately eliminated: those clubs drop down to the league phase of the Europa League. So a lot is riding on it - a qualifying campaign decides not only on Champions League football, but also on European survival in general, with the associated profile and revenue for the club.
