Belgians in La Liga: 2026/27 overview

Thibaut Courtois: Real Madrid's Belgian goalkeeper

Thibaut Courtois is this page's undisputed headline act. The goalkeeper, born on 11 May 1992 in Bree, has been under contract at Real Madrid since 2018 and is the club's first-choice keeper. Standing over two metres tall with sharp reflexes, he's ranked for years among the best goalkeepers in La Liga and, by extension, in world football. Courtois has built an honours list at Real Madrid that, according to Transfermarkt, includes two UEFA Champions League titles and four Spanish league titles, on top of earlier European and English honours from his spell at Chelsea. Courtois' career: Chelsea, Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid

Courtois' career in Spain didn't start at Real Madrid straight away. After joining Chelsea, he was loaned out to Atletico Madrid between 2011 and 2014, where he developed as a young goalkeeper into a mainstay in La Liga and played through a period in which the Madrid club repeatedly caused upsets in Spanish and European competition. After that loan spell he returned to Chelsea, where he was first choice until 2018 and won several English and European honours. In 2018 he then moved to Real Madrid, where he's been the undisputed number one ever since. That path, via a loan at another La Liga club before eventually arriving at the league's biggest club, is unusual for a player of his calibre, and shows just how long Courtois has been part of Spanish football: his ties to La Liga now stretch back more than a decade, well before his permanent move to Real Madrid.

Alongside his role at Real Madrid, Courtois is also the regular goalkeeper for the Belgian national team. Over the past few years he's grown into one of the most experienced names in the Belgian squad, holding a position he hasn't had to give up to a rival for quite some time. Alongside Courtois, this transfer window also saw Lucas Stassin make the move to La Liga. The young Belgian striker, born on 29 November 2004 in Braine-le-Comte, has been playing on loan for Sevilla FC since this season, with an option to buy at the end of the loan spell. Before his move to Spain, Stassin played for AS Saint-Etienne in France's Ligue 2, where his goalscoring caught the eye of bigger clubs. At Sevilla, he still has to earn a regular starting spot in a squad with more competition up front, but his move to an established La Liga club shows that clubs in Spain outside Real Madrid and Barcelona keep showing interest in Belgian attacking talent too. Yanis Musuayi at Levante

The third Belgian name in La Liga this season is Yanis Musuayi, a forward born on 26 June 2007. Musuayi previously played for Club NXT, Club Brugge's reserve side, where he stood out in last season's Youth League. In August 2026 he moved to Levante UD, who signed him on a contract through 2030. At nineteen, Musuayi is the youngest of the three Belgians on this page and still has to earn his place in Levante's first team, but his move to a La Liga club at such a young age underlines just how sought-after young Belgian attacking talent currently is among Spanish clubs outside the absolute top. Alongside Stassin at Sevilla, he forms a new, younger generation of Belgians in La Liga, distinct from the established name of Courtois at Real Madrid.

Other Belgian names: what we can and can't confirm

While putting this page together, the name Jesse Bisiwu also came up, a young Belgian winger who moved from Club Brugge to FC Barcelona this summer for around 8.5 million euros. That transfer genuinely happened, but Bisiwu currently plays for Barcelona Atletic, the club's reserve side competing in Spain's Segunda Federacion, the fourth tier, and therefore not in La Liga itself. For that reason, we don't list him here as a "Belgian playing in La Liga": that would make things sound better than they currently are. Further checks turned up no additional Belgian names at the other La Liga clubs, such as Villarreal, Real Sociedad, Athletic Bilbao or Atletico Madrid. Axel Witsel, formerly at Atletico Madrid, left Spanish football in 2025 for Nice and is therefore no longer a current-season fact.
