What is La Liga?
La Liga, also officially known as the Primera División, is the top division of Spanish football and is widely regarded as one of the strongest leagues in Europe. The 2026/27 season features twenty clubs, who face each other home and away across a total of 38 matchdays. That works out to 380 matches over the full season, which kicked off on the weekend of 15 August 2026 and runs through to the final matchday on the weekend of 28 to 30 May 2027. Traditionally, the season revolves around the two heavyweights Barcelona and Real Madrid, with Atlético Madrid as the regular third name near the top of the table. Just as important is the battle that plays out at the bottom of the table every season: the fight against relegation to the Segunda División, the second tier of Spanish football.
This season at a glance
FC Barcelona begin the 2026/27 season as defending champions, after winning the club's 29th league title in 2025/26 under coach Hansi Flick, sealing it with a few matchdays still to play. Real Madrid took to the field this season for the first time under head coach José Mourinho, with a squad that includes Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior and Jude Bellingham. Mbappé was also last season's top scorer, with 25 league goals for Real Madrid. Three clubs were promoted this season from the Segunda División: Racing Santander (champions, back in the top flight after fourteen years), Deportivo La Coruña (runners-up) and Málaga (via the play-offs). Real Oviedo, RCD Mallorca and Girona were relegated after last season and are now focused on an immediate return to the top flight.
