WC 2026 is the first edition with 48 nations, 12 groups, a new round of 32, and 104 matches across 39 days. The format change is the biggest since 1998, when the field expanded from 24 to 32 teams.

Group stage: 12 groups of 4

The 48 qualified nations are drawn into 12 groups (A through L) of 4 teams each. Every team plays the other three in its group once. That gives each team 3 group matches and 72 group matches in total across the field.

The group stage runs from 11 June to 27 June. The top two finishers in each group automatically progress to the round of 32. The eight best third-placed teams across the 12 groups join them.

The eight best third-placed teams

A new mechanic for WC 2026: of the 12 third-placed teams across the groups, 8 advance to the round of 32. The ranking uses the same order as above (points, goal difference, goals scored, etc.), applied across all 12 third-placed teams as a single mini-league.

Practical implication: a third-placed team with 4 points and a positive goal difference will usually progress. A third-placed team with 3 points and a negative goal difference is on the bubble. With 12 groups, the cut-off is typically around 4 points or 3 points with a strong goal difference.

Round of 32 through the Final

Knockout football starts on 28 June with the round of 32. Every match is a one-off, with extra time and penalties if level after 90 minutes.

39-day match calendar

From the opening match on 11 June to the Final on 19 July is 39 days. The schedule is dense: in the early group stage there are usually 4 matches per day, dropping to 2 matches per day in the late group stage as the field thins out, then back up to 4 matches per day in the round of 32.

What the new format means for betting

Three structural effects worth knowing before you stake on outright markets.

1. Easier group progression

With 8 best-third spots, only 16 of the 48 teams go out at the group stage. That means a To Qualify From Group market is priced at higher implied probability than at any previous edition. Mid-tier nations now have a clearer path through to the knockout stages.

2. Extra knockout round, more variance

The Tournament Winner now needs to win 5 knockout matches instead of 4. Each knockout adds variance: a strong favourite that previously needed to win 4 in a row now needs 5. That spreads probability slightly more across the field and leaves more room for an upset.

3. Higher load on top players

A finalist plays 8 matches in 39 days, compared to 7 in 28 days at Qatar 2022. Player fatigue is a bigger factor in the late stages. Top Scorer markets reward players from teams that go deep, so the extra round can shift Golden Boot probability towards those who progress to the semi-final and beyond.
