For the first time in WC history, WC 2026 adds a brand new knockout level: a Round of 32 sandwiched between the group stage and the Round of 16. From 28 June to 4 July 2026, sixteen win-or-go-home matches will reshape the bracket and decide which sides keep dreaming of the trophy. It means an extra level of pressure, an extra knockout match to get through and an extra opportunity for a giant killing.

Below you will find how the new round works, exactly when Belgium could play, every venue hosting a tie and the storylines worth tracking before we reach this historic stage of the competition. 

1. What is the Round of 32?

The Round of 32 is the first knockout phase of WC 2026. Sixteen single-elimination matches are played from Sunday 28 June to Saturday 4 July 2026, with the winners progressing to the Round of 16. It is the most significant structural change to the tournament bracket since the last-16 element was introduced in 1986. 

The new round is a direct consequence of the expanded 48-team field, hosted across Canada, Mexico and the United States. With 104 total matches and 12 groups of four, the organisers needed an extra knockout stage to absorb the larger pool. Group winners and runners-up alone produce 24 qualifiers, so the eight best third-placed sides also progress to round the bracket out to 32.

For supporters this means more knockout drama and a slightly tighter schedule. Group winners no longer get the smoothest possible draw and every qualified team now needs to win one more match than Argentina did when the won the trophy in 2022. 

Historically, the tournament bracket has been remarkably stable. The 32-team field used from 1998 to 2022 had a clean Round of 16, eight quarter-finals and four semi-finals. By adding the Round of 32, the new format trades that elegance for inclusion: more federations get a knockout fixture, more host cities get a marquee game and a much larger pool of supporters gets the do-or-die drama that defines a the tournament summer.

2. Which teams qualify for the Round of 32?

Qualification happens along two tracks:

• Top two from each group: 24 teams progress directly, made up of the 12 group winners and 12 group runners-up.
• Eight best third-placed teams: from the 12 third-placed sides, eight progress based on a tournament-wide ranking.

Selecting the eight best third-placed teams is the most technical part of the new format. Sides finishing third in their group are ranked using the following sequence of criteria:

Once the eight qualifying third-placed sides are confirmed, they are slotted into the bracket using a pre-determined matrix. That is why some pairings in the schedule below are written as "3CEFHI" or "3EHIJK". The code simply means "the third-placed team from one of those listed groups", with the exact identity decided only when all 36 group-stage matches have been played.

Four third-placed teams are eliminated at the group stage. With 12 groups of four, that small margin keeps every dead-rubber match competitive: a side sitting third on the final group day still has a clear path through, even from below a runner-up.

It also makes it more difficult for the stronger teams to be eliminated from the group stage, meaning the bigger teams should progress to take part in at least one knockout match. 

3. Round of 32 schedule

The Round of 32 spans seven days, from Sunday 28 June to Saturday 4 July 2026. Sixteen matches are spread across fourteen host cities in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Belgian kick-off times below use Central European Summer Time (CEST). Six matches start after midnight Belgian time, so several West Coast and Mexico ties will demand a late night or an early alarm.

Pairing codes: "1A" is the winner of Group A, "2B" is the runner-up of Group B. Multi-letter codes like "3CEFHI" mean the third-placed team from one of the listed groups, decided by the final ranking of the eight qualifying third-placed sides.

4. From Round of 32 to the final

Round of 32 winners feed into the Round of 16, which runs from Saturday 4 July to Tuesday 7 July 2026. From there the bracket follows a familiar shape:

• Round of 16: 4 to 7 July 2026 (8 matches)
• Quarter-finals: 9 to 11 July 2026 (4 matches)
• Semi-finals: 14 to 15 July 2026 (2 matches)
• Play-off for third place: Saturday 18 July 2026
• Final: Sunday 19 July 2026, New York New Jersey Stadium 

A team that wins the trophy now plays eight matches in total: three group games plus five knockout ties. That is one more than the previous 32-team format. The added physical load and the shorter recovery between knockout fixtures are two of the biggest tactical implications of the expanded bracket. Squad depth, rotation decisions and overeall team harmony will all come under scrutiny.

5. Belgium's possible routes through the Round of 32

Belgium are in Group G alongside Egypt, IR Iran and New Zealand. Three different Round of 32 paths open up depending on the team's group-stage finish.

Tactically, the Belgium camp will want a first-place finish in Group G. Topping the group ensures a slightly easier Round of 32 fixture against a third-placed side, and it removes the risk of an early-round meeting with a Group D heavyweight.

Second place locks in a more familiar bracket position but a tougher opponent on paper, and a third-place means no guarentees in qualifying - only eight of the twelve third-placed teams progress - and those that do face a Group A, B, D, I, K or L winner. 

Without question, Belgium will want to keep their fate in their own hands and finish in one of the top two positions. 

6. Key storylines to watch

A few patterns are worth tracking once the Round of 32 pairings fall into place.

Eight group winners face third-placed sides

The winners of Groups A, B, D, E, G, I, K and L are paired with a third-placed team. On paper this looks like a soft opener, but the eight third-placed sides that progress will be dangerous. None of them will roll over and teams won't know who they are facing until a couple of days before, making it harder for the top seeds to scout opponents in advance.

Runner-up clashes can become early heavyweight ties

Three Round of 32 matches pit two group runners-up against each other: 2A v 2B, 2E v 2I and 2K v 2L. The last two have the most blockbuster potential. If Germany, France, Portugal or England drop points and finish second, the bracket suddenly produces a heavyweight tie two rounds earlier than the schedule would normally allow.
