On 5 December 2025, WC 2026 draw set the stage for the biggest football tournament ever staged. Held at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., the ceremony placed all 48 qualified nations into 12 groups of four and mapped out the route to the New York New Jersey Stadium on 19 July 2026.

By the end of the night, every one of the 48 qualified nations had been allocated to one of 12 groups. Six places were still pencilled in as play-off winners on draw day, but those slots were filled in March 2026 once the European and intercontinental play-offs had concluded.

2. How the Draw Worked: 4 Pots Explained

The 2026 tournament expands from 32 to 48 teams, which means a new group structure. Forty-eight nations were split across four pots of twelve, with the seeding logic carried over from previous editions:

• Pot 1 contained the three co-host nations (Canada, Mexico, USA) plus the nine highest ranked qualified teams in the November 2025 world ranking.
• Pots 2, 3 and 4 were filled by the next ranked tiers in descending order.
• Six play-off winner slots sat in Pot 4 as placeholders on draw day and were confirmed in March 2026.

Two seeding constraints applied throughout. First, no two teams from the same confederation could be drawn into the same group, with one exception: the European confederation can have a maximum of two teams per group, given its much larger contingent. Second, the three co-hosts were pre-allocated to fixed positions: Mexico in Group A, Canada in Group B and USA in Group D. That guarantees host openings on home soil at the Mexico City Stadium, Toronto Stadium and Los Angeles Stadium.

3. Pot 1 to Pot 4: Who Was Where

Pot 1: the seeds

Pot 1 stacked the three co-hosts alongside the strongest qualified teams: a who-is-who of Europe and South America, joined by Belgium as the ninth-ranked qualifier.

Pot 2: the second tier

Pot 2 lined up the next twelve highest ranked qualified teams. There is genuine quality here, with Morocco, Croatia and Switzerland the standout names alongside South American sides and Asia's two strongest qualifiers.

Pot 3: the middle ground

Pot 3 mixed established names like Norway and Egypt with returning the tournament sides such as Tunisia, Paraguay and Saudi Arabia. Scotland, qualifying through the European playoffs route after a strong campaign, also landed here.

Pot 4: the long shots and play-off winners

Pot 4 gathered the lowest ranked qualified teams plus six play-off placeholders. Once the March 2026 play-offs had concluded, those six slots were filled by Czechia, Türkiye, Sweden and Bosnia-Herzegovina (through the European playoffs) plus Iraq and Congo DR (through the intercontinental playoffs).

A few takeaways jump out. Group C is the toughest assignment of the lot for the second seed, with Brazil priced as short as anything on the board and Morocco still a 6.00 chance despite their semi-final run in 2022. Group D is set to be extremely close between hosts USA and Türkiye, while Group B is the only group where the Pot 2 team (Switzerland) is shorter than the Pot 1 host (Canada).

6. How the Draw Shapes the Knockout Path

Because the tournament now runs to 48 teams, the knockout stage starts with a Round of 32 rather than a Round of 16. Thirty-two of the 48 group-stage sides progress: all 12 group winners and runners-up, plus the eight best third-placed teams across the 12 groups, ranked on points, goal difference and goals scored.

The bracket logic was fixed at the time of the draw. Group winners are mapped against runners-up or best thirds in a pre-determined pattern, which means each group already knows which other groups it could face two rounds deep, even before a ball has been kicked. 7. Post-Draw Outright Winner Odds

With every group locked in, the outright winner market settled into a clear pecking order. Spain emerged as the shortest price on the Napoleon Sports board, with France close behind and the usual heavyweights filling out the next tier. Belgium, drawn into a reasonably kind Group G as Pot 1 seed, completes the top 10.

8. What the Draw Means for Belgium (Group G)

The draw was rather kind to the Belgians. Belgium sit in Group G alongside IR Iran (Pot 2), Egypt (Pot 3) and New Zealand (Pot 4): a group with no obvious Pot 1 banana skin and no top-15 second seed. On paper, this looks like one of the most navigable Pot 1 routes through to the Round of 32.

The board agrees. Belgium is priced 1.28 to top the group, with Egypt at 7.00 the only other side under double figures. The outright price of 40.00 puts the Belgians tenth overall in the title race.
