This page tracks WC 2026 group standings across all 12 groups, from Group A through to Group L. With the expanded 48-team format, the structure of the group stage is the same as previous editions (4 teams, 3 matches each, top of the table goes through), but the route to the knockout bracket has changed.

1. How the Group Stage Works in WC 2026

48 teams are divided into 12 groups of four (A to L), drawn on 5 December 2025 in Washington D.C. Each side plays the other three teams in its group once, which gives 36 group-stage matches in total across the opening 17 days of the tournament. The group stage runs from Thursday 11 June 2026 to Sunday 28 June 2026.

The points system is unchanged from previous tournaments: 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss. The top two teams from each group go through to the Round of 32 automatically. The eight best third-placed teams, ranked across all 12 groups, also progress. Four third-placed teams are eliminated at the group stage.

2. Reading the Group Tables

Each group table uses the standard set of columns. Here is what each abbreviation means:

• P: matches played
• W: matches won
• D: matches drawn
• L: matches lost
• GF: goals for (scored)
• GA: goals against (conceded)
• GD: goal difference (GF minus GA)
• Pts: total points

Teams are sorted by points first. When points are level, the tiebreakers in the next section decide who sits higher. Pre-tournament, all values are 0 and teams are listed in draw order (Pot 1 first, Pot 4 last).

3. Tiebreaker Rules: How Teams Are Ranked

When two or more teams in the same group finish on the same number of points, the tiebreakers below decide which side ranks higher. The process is applied in order, with each step only used if the previous one fails to separate the teams.

The fair-play record at step 7 uses a points system, with negative points assigned per yellow card, second yellow leading to a red, direct red and red plus yellow. The team with fewer negative points sits higher.

In practice, most groups settle on goal difference and goals scored before the head-to-head criteria are needed. The drawing of lots at step 8 has not been used at the tournament since the 1990 tournament in Italy.

4. Best Third-Placed Teams: 8 of 12 Progress

The 48-team format brings a new wrinkle: the eight best third-placed teams across the 12 groups also progress to the Round of 32. That is the most technical part of the expanded format and the part fans most often ask about.

A cross-group ranking is built from the 12 third-placed sides, using a separate sequence of tiebreakers. The eight highest-ranked sides go through, with four eliminated.

Note the absence of head-to-head: that step does not apply across groups, because the 12 third-placed sides obviously do not all play each other. The cross-group method is points plus goals plus discipline.

The eight qualifying third-placed teams are slotted into pre-determined bracket positions, which is why the Round of 32 pairing codes look like "1A v 3CEFHI" rather than fixed team names. For the full Round of 32 layout, see the Round of 32 guide.

6. When the Standings Update

The group stage is structured around three matchdays per group, spread across roughly two weeks. Tables on this page update after every confirmed result, with the daily refresh typically happening overnight in Belgian time.

Here is the broad timing in Belgian terms. The opening match is on Thursday 11 June 2026 in Mexico City. The final group-stage matches kick off on Friday 26 June and Saturday 27 June, with all 36 group games played within 18 days. Matchday three for each group is played simultaneously across two venues, which keeps the integrity of the tiebreaker calculation intact.

7. What the Standings Mean for the Knockout Bracket

The standings decide three things: who progresses, where they sit in the bracket and which side of the draw they end up on. Essentially, it shapes every team's potential route to the final. The Round of 32 pairings were fixed at the draw, so a team that wins its group enters the bracket at a different position than a team that finishes second, which sets the route through to a possible Round of 16, quarter-final and semi-final.

Finishing first in the group has two benefits. First, the Round of 32 opponent is one of the best third-placed sides rather than a runner-up from a tough group. Second, the projected route avoids the toughest pre-determined pairings deeper in the bracket. Finishing third and qualifying as one of the best eight is the most fraught route: those teams face Group A, B, D, I, K or L winners in the Round of 32.
